Carles Puyol furious after Real Madrid's Champions League success

Real Madrid won their fourth Champions League in five years in Kiev
Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol is "furious" after Real Madrid won the Champions League for a record 13th time and says the Catalans must change priorities next season.
Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev to win the trophy for the third successive year, taking the focus away from Barcelona's La Liga and Copa del Rey double.
"I am convinced that we have a better team than Madrid, but they have won four of the last five Champions Leagues," Puyol told Barcelona based newspaper La Vanguardia."I think the solution comes from getting our priorities straight. We're losing an opportunity and I'm furious about that as a Barca fan.
"Winning the treble is extremely hard as statistics shows, so I think the most sensible thing would be to relegate the Copa del Rey.
"Don't get me wrong, I loved playing in the final, but the path there should be for the reserves and the young players to show if they are good enough or not."
"I think the solution comes from getting our priorities straight. We're losing an opportunity and I'm furious about that as a Barca fan.
Barcelona have won the Copa del Rey four seasons running but only progressed beyond the Champions League quarter-finals once in that time, when they won it in 2015.
"We have a great team and we have Leo [Messi], I think the Champions League has a much bigger global impact and also [impacts] on the Ballon d'Or.
"I have no doubt who is the best player in the world but Messi should be showing his talent above all in La Liga and in Europe, I'm sure he'd agree with me."
Messi and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo have each won the Ballon d'Or five times, but the Portuguese forward has won three of the last four, coinciding with his team's Champions League wins in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Siya Kolisi: South Africa name first black Test captain for England series

Siya Kolisi

Flanker Siya Kolisi will become South Africa's first black Test captain in the three-match series against England next month.
The 26-year-old - who has played 28 international Tests - replaces the injured Warren Whiteley as captain.
Pieter-Steph du Toit will captain the Springboks in Saturday's match against Wales in Washington DC, USA.
"I believe both of them will do a good job as captains," said head coach Rassie Eramus.
"It is a huge honour to captain the Springboks and Siya and Pieter-Steph are two honest, hard-working men who enjoy the respect of their fellow players."
Kolisi, who skippers Super Rugby team Western Stormers, made his Test debut against Scotland in 2013.
Chiliboy Ralepelle became the first black player to skipper the South African national team when they faced a World XV in England in 2006, but the match did not have Test status.
Rugby in South Africa has struggled to shake off the belief it is a 'white' sport, after black people were barred from playing during apartheid.
South African Rugby and the government have agreed that 50% of the Springboks' team at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan should be black.
England's tour of South Africa starts on 9 June at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Injured Carvajal handed World Cup hope after Champions League final tears

The Real Madrid right-back picked up an untimely hamstring problem against Liverpool, but he might still feature in Spain's plans this summer
Dani Carvajal may yet make the World Cup with Spain despite suffering a hamstring injury in the Champions League final.
But tests carried out by Madrid and observed by Spain's medical team revealed Carvajal's injury is not as serious as first feared, with a reported timeframe of two to three weeks placed upon his recovery.
statement issued by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed the 26-year-old will join up with Julen Lopetegui's squad later on Monday to continue his rehabilitation.
It read: “Carvajal has undergone the relevant tests by the medical services of his club, at which the doctors of the Spanish national team were present.

Russian football chief asks: where are the stadium roofs?

The head of Russia’s Premier League is not particularly happy with all the new stadiums the hosts have built for the World Cup.
Russia spared little expense in either completely revamping or building from scratch 12 football-specific arenas for the June 14-July 15 showpiece.
Yet only the one in Saint Peterburg has a retractable roof.
All the others are open to the elements and Premier League chief Sergei Pryadkin is not pleased.“When we were holding test matches in the new stadiums, I kept asking myself: why didn’t they put roofs on them? This is a question for those who were designing them,” Pryadkin told a press conference.
Pryadkin’s comments marked the most explicit public criticism of Russia’s preparations for its first World Cup to date.
Russian football has suffered for generations from horrible pitches that are either covered in snow during winter or resemble sandpits in the spring and fall.
The northern climate prompted the Soviet Union and then Russia to build indoor arenas with synthetic grass in many of the cities where football is professionally played.
But these are now used solely for training because the Premier League — looking to adopt international standards — only allows games on real grass.
Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko last week suggested lifting the indoor arena ban.
“Why did we build them then?” Mutko asked.
The authorities have tried to get around the problem by shutting down the season for nearly three months in the winter to let all the snow melt.
Yet players complain that this fails to address the issue of pitches not having suitable grass in other times of the year.
– Beer ban –
Russia is believed to have spent at least $4 billion (3.4 billion euros) on stadium construction and refurbishment for the World Cup.
The gleaming arenas will then be handed over to the cities’ local football teams in the hopes of reviving attendance and the quality of domestic league play.
Pryadkin said the plan was already starting to pay off.
“Fan attendance is up 22.4 percent this season,” he said.
Nearly 14,000 spectators showed up to an average Russian Premier League match.
But the financial figures still do not add up.
The government admitted in April that it will have to spend around $200 million on keeping stadiums open in seven of the smaller host cities for the first three to five years.
Pryadkin sounded generally disgruntled with the way the World Cup’s football legacy was shaping up.
“It is good that we now have good arenas, even though they have no roofs,” he said. “When they were building the stadiums, no one asked for our advice.”
He added that the sport’s federation was unlikely to accept the money-spinning idea of resuming beer sales at matches that were banned in 1995.
“I am all in favour of fighting alcoholism, but I don’t see anything wrong with a glass of beer and a hotdog at a game,” he said.
