These 2 Robbers Drown Inside Lagos Canal While Escaping With N13,000 (See Photo)

Two robbery suspects have drowned inside a canal in the Ojota area of Lagos while they were escaping with a mobile phone and N13,000, snatched from their victim.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased were part of a five-man gang, which had unleashed terror on the Olusosun, Ojota, area, before attacking the male victim, whose name had yet to be given, at about 8pm around the Olusosun dump.

It was learnt that a local vigilance group, however, apprehended two members of the gang, and handed them over to the Alausa Police Division, while three of the robbers escaped.

Our correspondent learnt that on Saturday, two corpses, suspected to be the fleeing robbers, were, however, found trapped inside the Olusosun canal around the dump.

When our correspondent visited the area, a construction worker, who gave his name as Saliu Ahmed, said officers of the Neighbourhood Watch gave the robbers a chase before two of them slipped into the canal.

He said, “It was a about 8pm on Thursday. I knew when officers of the Neighbourhood Watch at the Olusosun dump, gave the robbers a chase. They later got two of them and took them to the police at Alausa.

“The robbers had stolen one Nokia mobile phone and the sum of N13,000 from their victim around the dump. Three of the gang members escaped that evening. It was then surprising that on Saturday, at about 12pm, the alarm was raised that two bodies were trapped in the canal.

“When the officers came to examine them, it was discovered that the victims were two of the fleeing robbers who slipped and died in the canal. It was the police who later came to remove the corpses.”

Our correspondent learnt that the bodies had been deposited at a public morgue for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, had yet to reply to a text message sent to his phone on the incident.

BREAKING: UNILAG Postpones Exams Over Bedbug Saga

BREAKING: UNILAG Postpones Exams Over Bedbug Saga

Following the incessant trouble bedeviling the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the institution has decided to  postponed its forthcoming examinations slated for October 12 to 19.

It would be recalled that Hundreds of students of the University of Lagos yesterday staged a protest against bed bug, which they said invaded their campus hostels.

The protest started from Marire Hall to New Hall comprising Sodeinde Hall, Eni Njoku,Makama Bida Hall, Madam Tinubu Hall, Fagunwa Hall.

Deputy Registrar (Information) Mr Olagoke Oke who promulgated this to news men said that the institution would change the bed bug infested mattresses and furniture, which led to the protest and fumigate the hostels.

He said: “We cannot fumigate when students are on campus so we would wait for them to go on break before that. But plans are at an advanced stage to procure new mattresses for all the hostels. It is not just one mattress we are buying, but many, so it would take some processes and negotiations. The university is giving the students a one-week postponement of their examinations also.”

Students Union President Abiodun Martins urged management to go beyond yearly fumigation after procuring the mattresses.

Clerk of parliament, Adeonipekun Adeyanju said: “Management has agreed to buy new mattresses and change the bunks in the hostels and also buy a covering for the mattresses to prevent them from easy harm and dirt. However, I would advise them to fumigate every week once they start. Those things can hide anywhere and they have already laid eggs in hidden corners. So they can fumigate every week for a period of one month or even more to be sure they are all gone.”

A tour yesterday showed that the halls of residence are in good shape.

4 Thoughts You Have that May Be Holding You Back

Why are most of us struggling to obtain success? You likely experience a pattern of thoughts that hold you back so you can create the success you need. From thinking your lack of success is the fault of others to negative past experiences, you may be holding yourself back. Here are a few main ways you are holding yourself back:

Blaming Others
This is a very common thought process that results in many people not taking action on their goals. They get held back in the thought that it’s the fault of their parents, teachers, government or somebody else. But when we get adulthood we struggle to switch from being reliant on others to get by, to being responsible for ourselves.

So, we blame others for not handing us success. We say things like “How dare the government cut my benefits, how am I supposed to live?” or “I would have decent education if I just had a good teacher at school”.

What we should be doing is looking at ourselves and wondering why we aren’t getting the pay rise or promotion or getting that job in the first place. We must put in the work to reap the rewards and not blame others for our own misfortune. Nobody is going to give you more than you are worth and just hand you success on the plate because you think that is what you are due. We need to take responsibility for our own lives and create our own success.

A Lack Of Resources
“I can’t start on online business, I just don’t have to time, money or skills to do it.” “I can’t go to the gym because it is just too far away and too expensive.” “I can’t find my perfect partner because I just don’t have the time to go out and meet people.” Sound familiar?

We commonly use these excuses to get out of working hard on even the things that we want to do and makes us happy. We spend hours a day in front of the television and then say we don’t have time to go to the gym or take a class. We waste our money on things we don’t need, then say we don’t have the money to start a business. We need to turn this on the head and instead of making excuses, we need to get up out of our comfort zone and do the things we have to do to create the success and happiness we deserve and want.
Fear Of Failure
A lot of people don’t aim for that high because they automatically think they will fail and be a laughingstock of their friends, family and colleagues. When what they should be thinking is that failure is part of learning and creating success. It is legend that Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before inventing the light bulb.

And he invented other things along the way. How many times did you mumble your words when you learnt to speak, how many times did you fall of your bike when you learnt to ride it, how many times to did you fall ever when you learnt to walk? Failure is a prerequisite to success, embrace it.

A Negative Past
A common struggle with people and their thoughts is maybe there was a past struggle or affliction that can hold us back. Growing up with illness and at a result we struggle with school and learning. Maybe not having the support structure that is seen as the norm can hold us back.

This is understandable to a certain extent, but how many times have we heard stories of people, like rapper 50 Cent, who lived a life of crime and even nearly died after being shot, then went on to being a successful musician.

And there are many others who are brought up in broken homes with very little and can’t see a way out. You just got to find the right key to the right door. And that key is hard work on the right things and the door is your dream lifestyle. Take action now, become an inspiration.

We all have negative thoughts, it is how we use them that either holds us back or creates the success we crave.

How do you handle you negative thoughts?  Do they hold you back?

Interesting! LASU Male Staff Want Paternity Leave (SEE WHY)

The Lagos State University (LASU), has advised its male staff members to avails themselves of paternity leave, approved for workers in Lagos state’s Public Service‎.

The advice is contained in the university’s official bulletin, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

It noted that while deserving female members of staff of the institution had been proceeding on maternity leave, their male counterparts were yet to enjoy it.

“The university authority hereby reminds members of staff (male) of the existing Lagos State Maternity and Paternity Leave approved for employees in the state’s civil service.

“It would be recalled that the university authority at its meeting on September 8, 2014, considered and approved the implementation of the new Lagos State maternity and paternity leave for officials in the state’s public service,’’ it said.

According to the bulletin, the male members of staff ‎who wish to make official request for paternity leave are to do so on the first day of delivery of the baby.

“In addition, for deliveries that fall on weekends, application should be forwarded to the establishment on the first day of work.

“Please, note that paternity leave is for the first 10 days in relation to and at the time of the first two deliveries of a male staff’s spouse,” the publication said.

PLASU To be Fully Accredited Soon – NUC

The Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, will soon have all its 17 courses accredited, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), when he visited the university on Monday, blamed the lingering accreditation problem on “the failure of past Plateau governments to do the needful”.

NAN reports that the university which was established 10 years ago and currently has over 2,000 students in 17 departments in four faculties, had existed without any accreditation from the NUC.

Okojie blamed the lingering problem of accreditation on the past governments that “just refused to do the right thing”.

The NUC boss said that the issue would soon be a thing of the past, since the current Plateau administration was doing all it could to ensure things were put aright.
We seriously sympathize with our students for all the pains and trauma they have gone through as a result of the lack of accreditation of the university.

“We told the former administrations the right things to do, but they never heeded.

“Be that as it may, I want to assure you that the turning point of this university is by the corner; I have the pen and the paper, very soon, most of your courses will get accredited,” he said.

Okojie commended the university for the “slow but steady progress it was making”, and called on the Plateau government to sustain the support to make for optimal productivity.

He, however, decried the dearth of qualified members of staff in the university, and urged its administrators to sponsor their staff for further studies.

He also called on the university to incorporate its host communities into its activities, so as promote mutual affection and respect. (NAN)

10 Easy Ways To Protect Your Eyes From The Harms of Digital Devices (SHARE THIS)

Most people, myself included, spend a considerable amount of time in front of digital devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones without protective glasses. Unfortunately, they are simply unaware of the harmful effects that these digital devices have on the eyes. Those who are aware don’t seem know that there are easy ways to protect their eyes. If you want to protect your eyes, below are some easy tips that you can incorporate into your daily routine without throwing away your digital devices.

1. Exercise your eyes
If you keep your eyes glued to a digital device without blinking or flexing them a bit, they will get accustomed to that device distance. You will experience problems when trying to focus on anything farther or closer to the device. You should try to move your eyes around more, changing their position or flexing them every 20 minutes or less.

2. Sit a few inches away from your digital device
Optometrists recommend that you sit at least an arm’s length away from your digital screen. If you are working on a desktop computer, you will need to position it properly to reach the base of your fingers when your arm is extended fully.

3. Expose your eyes to the daylight
Go out for a nature walk after you have spent some time in front of a screen. Daylight will help to adjust your natural circadian rhythms and reconnect your eyes with nature, thus improving your mood and sleep.

4. Adjust your screen lighting
Your screen lights should be adjusted in relation to your environment. If you are in a brightly lit room, you will need to increase your screen’s brightness setting. If you are working in a dim room, you will need to decrease your screen’s light settings.

5. Reduce glare from your device screen
There are several ways you can do this, such as keeping the screen clean, sitting away from open windows, using lower voltage bulbs, or blocking the incoming rays or flashes.

6. Ask your doctor to recommend specialized glasses
Your doctor may recommend you use specialized glasses to reduce glare and eyestrain from your digital device. These glasses will help protect your eyes from harmful glare whenever you use them. Keep in mind that reading glasses don’t protect your eyes from this glare.

7. Protect your eyes with your diet
A good diet prevents the eyes from getting sick or treats eyes that have been affected by the harmful effects of digital devices. Foods that contain plenty of vitamin C, vitamin A, Zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids improve eye vision and the performance of the nerves.

8. Position your screen 5 inches below your eye level
This will ensures that a greater percentage of your eyeballs are protected by your eyelids, since your eyes are opened at a smaller angle.

9. Take regular breaks
Eye experts recommend that for every two hours that you are glued to a digital device, you should take a break for 15 to 20 minutes. During the breaks, you should allow your eyes to blink, rest, and re-lubricate. Taking regular breaks will protect not only your eyes but also your general health.

10. Limit your digital device use
In fact, limiting the time you are seated in front of a digital device and using protective glasses are the two most effective ways of minimizing the harmful effects of your digital screens. If you are unable to reduce use, at least cut back before bedtime.

Never let an eye problem be a hindrance to your work or fun if you are a regular user of digital devices. By following the above tips, you will help protect your eyes from the problems brought about by digital devices.

100,000 Youths to Benefit From Ikpeazu’s E4E Programme (See Details)

100,000 Youths to Benefit From Ikpeazu’s E4E Programme (See Details)

Over 100,000 youths will be trained in various technical and vocational skills by the Abia state government under its Education for Employment Programme (E4E) in the next 48 months.

Student Pulse gathered that the Technical Vocational Educational Training is scheduled to begin in November with100 students at three Technical Colleges; Boys’ Technical College, Secondary Technical Umuahia, and Government Technical Ohafia, representing for Abia South,  Abia Central and  Abia North senatorial zones of the state respectively.

The skills are expected to enable the youths to be self-employed or take up jobs in industries and help grow the economy.

Launching the programme at the Boys’ Technical College Aba, the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, who was represented by his Deputy, Ude Oko Chukwu, said E4E is will succeed with the support of the private sector.
“E4E is an employment generating programme that will only succeed when the private sector keys into it,” The Guardian quoted him as saying.

“Abia State in general and Aba in particular is an industrial and technical hub hence the various factories need manpower while the various creative processes require skills and finesse to maximize available opportunities.”

Each of the pilot colleges were presented with an E4E- branded bus at the event.

Governor Ikpeazu has focused on the education sector since he became governor of the state in May.

Last week, he awarded scholarships to two first class law graduates of the Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, and announced plans to slash tuition fees at the institution.

This 20-year-old student drowns while saving friend in boat accident (See Photo)

A 20-year-old British student, James Murphy, has died while trying to save a female friend during a kayaking (boat) trip in New Zealand.

Reports say Murphy, a student at Monash University in Australia, had travelled to New Zealand with friends.

But a change of weather tipped their kayaks into freezing water and they had to struggle to get to the shore.

Murphy and a 21-year-old student from New York, Daniel Thomas Hollnsteiner, died.

Hollnsteiner’s mother, Ria David, told UK Mirror that Murphy died while trying to save one of the ladies who was finding it difficult to swim in the freezing water.

He had made it to the shore safely but went back to save the lady.
But James himself never made it but the girl did,” Mrs David said.

Monash University mourned the two students in a Facebook post.

9 Tips for Students Who want excellent Grades in the University (SHARE THIS)

As written by Pulse Blogger: Kukogho Iruesiri Samason

So, how does a poor student survive the system? I will be talking from my own experiences at the Ahmadu Bello University(ABU), Zaria, where I emerged the second best graduating student, with 2 Class Upper Division, in my department without buying a single textbook throughout the four-year duration of my degree.

You too can achieve it with these 9 tips:

Never miss lectures – one habit you must never cultivate in the university is missing lectures. Even if you study at a university where the lecturers don’t grade your for attendance, you’ll miss a lot by not being present when your lectures explains topics and your course mates contribute to the discussions. You also stand the risk of missing out on ‘shot-guns’, sudden tests that could ruin your chances of a good grade in a course. At least you won’t have to beg and bribe any lecturer.
Always take notes – many students stay in class and refuse to take lecture notes for reasons best known to them. Even if you are not fast enough to get everything, jot down the key points of every lecture and build on them later. Interestingly, lectures often say what they expect in the exams during their classes. These notes can save you the need to photocopy/type handouts and textbooks.
Google and Wikipedia are your friends – even if you don’t have money for textbooks, there are a billion academic resources available online. Simply knowing how to use Wikipedia and Google will give you access to a gazillions of academic material. Cultivate the habit of Googling the parts of a lecture you don’t understand, immediately after the lecture is over.  As you read online, make further notes under what you got from the lecture.
Always participate/head group assignment projects – when you are given group assignments, always try to be active and if possible, head the groups. First of all, you will most likely not have to pay and secondly you gain more knowledge than the passive participants and this may come in handy in the exams.
Join/create study groups – study groups are very important because they help you to rub minds with your peers, learn in a relaxed environment and test your knowledge before the exams in an informal, relaxed setting. You can learn a lot from your colleagues.
Have a specific reading time and stick to it – it would be good if you can give yourself a reading timetable and stick to it. It will be tough at first, but the habit will stick if you struggle to maintain it and you’ll be glad you did. Find out the time (and conditions) you think you best assimilate and make it your study time. Personally, I like reading outside, in open spaces at night.
Exploit library off-peak periods – many times we find the libraries overcrowded or the books we need already borrowed. To avoid this, try to use the library at times when you know others will not be available. One of these times is in the afternoons when most of them will be sleeping, planning to come in the evenings. This will make the books available for you.
Buy your provisions in bulk as semesters start – this may sound funny, but you need to ensure that food is never a problem for you because a hungry stomach will prevent the brain from assimilating anything. As soon as you arrive from the holidays, stock a lot of non-perishable items, especially if you are allowed to cook in your hostels. It is cheaper to buy in bulk when you still have some money on you than to spend in bits.
Create time for school, God, love and fun – a clear mind is important to your success in school. This is why you need to make sure you find time to relax your mind from school stress, interact with other students and God. Though a sexual relationship is not advised, having a working relationship with someone intimate (platonic or otherwise) often works positively.

NASA confirms that Water is Flowing on Mars (SEE PICTURES)

New findings from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars.

Using an imaging spectrometer on MRO, researchers detected signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious streaks are seen on the Red Planet. These darkish streaks appear to ebb and flow over time. They darken and appear to flow down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then fade in cooler seasons. They appear in several locations on Mars when temperatures are above minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 Celsius), and disappear at colder times.

“Our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the universe, and now we have convincing science that validates what we’ve long suspected,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water — albeit briny — is flowing today on the surface of Mars.”

Two Women Fighting in Onitsha Fall from 3 storey building (GRAPHIC PHOTO)

The news of this gruesome disaster as narrated by an eyewitness:

This sad incident happened at my compound at Awada in Onitsha few minutes ago. The 2 women are living together in a flat because their husbands share a flat at our compound.

Even though their husbands are friends, The wives never got along and was always quarreling but nothing prepared us for what we saw this morning….

When their husband left for shop this morning, another round of fight began and this time it was different. We heard screaming and then a huge thud and then wailing and crying ensued.

I rushed to the veranda and discovered to my dismay that the women fell from their 3rd floor flat and both of the shattered many bones in their bodies. Both couldn’t stand but i suspect that the other may have broken her spinal cord because she couldn’t move a limb and her head was severely bashed and she was bleeding heavily. They have been rushed to Toronto hospital to ascertain the level of their injuries while we called up their husbands.

Things You Must Consider Before You Buy That Car

Things You Must Consider Before You Buy That Car:

An average Nigerian with a low budget face this type of dilemma often, most especially the people that want to buy their first car but they don’t have that millions of Naira to splash out on a car.

In as much as i hate to disagree, cars are liability and you get to start spending on it immediately you make payment.
Of course you get to spend by fueling the car but it also have its importance.

Back to the Topic, Which Type Of Car Should I Buy?
Ans: Buy something you can maintain even if it means waiting to complete the figures.

Maintenance of a car: is the basic thing every car owner must consider before making payment.
Do a thorough research, ask questions from anonymous mechanics that is not affiliated with the dealer or seller about the type of Car you want to purchase if it’s worth it and be very sure you’re not going to pay for a car you won’t be able to afford its parts.

Are the parts available in the market? This has to come next to maintenance of a car, don’t just wake up one day and go for that beauty you found available because you want to drive around like a boss!
Mechanical parts are not to be trusted, the car you park can develop a fault when you restart the ignition. Yes it’s that weird.

You must have seen cases of some expensive cars parked and you’d wonder why the owner abandon his/her car on a strange spot.
Unavailable or expensive parts could be the cause. Most times, it’s the cause.

That Mechanic around your area can testify to the above.

Fuel consumption: are you that guy or lady that have a specific budget to spend for a certain period of time, please avoid buying a car that consume fuel because you’ll realise you’re spending above what you’ve budgeted.

Your road: Although this one might not seem like an excuse but this is what realacars is all about, we’re not going to assume all our audience have good roads.

As the case might be, it’s not possible. If you fall into this category you really should think about this clue.
Don’t force your car to follow that bad roads, cars run with engines and parts. Don’t be surprise if your car suffer alignment and shock absorber problem often if you persists.

You can as well get the car but minimize the number of times you force it on that bad road.

There are lots more we will share with our readers subsequently on realacars.com and we’ll try as much as possible to publish affordable cars that are in good condition on this webpage.

Obafemi Martins Wins First Title Of The Season

Out-of-favour Super Eagles forward Obafemi Martins won his first trophy of the season after gracing the scoresheet once as his American club Seattle Sounder beat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 to win the Cascadia Cup 2015 on Saturday.
The tournament is a regional trophy contested by MLS teams – Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers – in the North-West.

Sounders topped the table on 12 points to win their fourth Cascadia Cup. The team with highest number of points in the tournament win the trophy.

According to The Olympian, Seattle broke through in the 45th minute when Martins chipped a pass to Andreas Ivanschitz, who broke past his defender down the left flank where he fired past goalkeeper David Ousted.

“It was a great pass from Oba, fantastic timing,” Ivanschitz said. “The angle wasn’t good for me then to finish. The only chance was to keep it on the ground, to hit it hard.”

The Whitecaps came out more aggressively in the second half, but that left them vulnerable to Seattle counters. Clint Dempsey assisted the Pineda goal in the 71st minute and the Martins goal in the 87th.

Students in Osun state-owned tertiary institutions, on Monday, held hostage the deputy governor of the state, Titi Laoye-Tomori, at the State Secretariat, in Osogbo.

Before the hostage-taking incident, the students had marched to the secretariat to protest against the prolonged strike by their lecturers.

Their lecturers have been on an indefinite strike for over three months ago, over unpaid salaries and other reasons.

Majority of the students are from Osun State Polytechnic, Iree; Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke; Colleges of Education in Ila and Ilesa.

After they arrived at the main gate of the state secretariat, Punch reports that they barricaded the entry points.

Shortly after, the Deputy Governor, was driven to the secretariat but the students prevented her convoy from entering the premises.

Some of the students were said to have laid on the ground in front of her car while some other, laid behind the car, hence, making it impossible for the vehicle of the deputy governor to enter the premises or retreat.

Amazing! Plateau State Governor volunteers as part time teacher (PICTURES)

The Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has pledged to create time and teach for at least one hour weekly as his contribution towards boosting education in the state.

Lalong made the pledge when he received officials of City of Refuge Friends Club, Pankshin.

He acknowledged the importance of education, saying that his administration would give special attention to sector

“We inherited a rot in the sector but are trying to give it the attention it deserves because if you build the roads and the people  are not educated, you have nothing,” he said.

Earlier, Miss Nenpan Zakka, Founder, City of Refuge, told the governor that they came to intimate him of their model of free education, designed by youths, for youths.

She appealed to the governor to volunteer to teacher for free, and to also replicate the model to boost education in Plateau. (NAN)

UBEC Constructs N255m E-Library In 3 Public Schools In Plateau State (PICTURES)

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is constructing E-libraries worth N255 million in three public schools in Plateau, an official of the commission has said.

The official, Dr Yakubu Gambo, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Services, told reporters on Sunday in Jos that project in each of the three schools would cost N85 million.

He said the libraries, which were nearing completion, were located at the Unity College Bokkos, Government Secondary School Pankshin and Federal Government Girls College, Langtang.

Gambo said the libraries would re-position the schools for learning and research materials.

The gunmen, who were said to have stormed the communities at about 4am, overpowered youths and policemen deployed in the areas before killing their victims.

A source from the area said while eight persons were mowed down by the attackers in Obrikom, five persons also lost their lives in similar circumstance in Omoku.

It was gathered that the operation, which lasted till noon, had turned Obikom to a ghost town as residents deserted the area for fear further attacks.

SEE the story of how this man survived the Hajj Stampede

Musa Kabir, recalling the dreadful events narrated his story:

“We set off at sunrise from Muzdalifah and marched towards the Jamarat,” the place in Mina where pilgrims ritually stone the devil.

“We were more than halfway through the procession when the road was blocked by the police, which led to buildup (of pilgrims).

“Then the police blocked all the roads, leaving us with only one route. The situation became worse when the police allowed people returning from the Jamarat to use the same route back to their tents,” the 55-year-old tall, thin trader continued.

Why the tragedy happened

“From where I stood, I could see a police officer on a raised platform at a nearby control post beckoning at pilgrims returning that they should move on.

“Because those returning were moving in the opposite (direction) of the surging crowd, there was a stampede.

“People became weak from suffocation and heat. People couldn’t breathe (in the crush). Many collapsed, mostly women and the old and disabled on wheelchairs.

“I also was pinned down by this huge man I believe to be an Asian. I had to strip myself of my shroud which had become an obstacle to my escape.

“I raised my hand and grabbed the shroud of another pilgrim from Nigeria who was already standing on a fence. He couldn’t pull me up because I was pinned down by this huge man.”

Kabir desperately grabbed the man’s testicles “and squeezed them which made him jump off me.”
This enabled me to use my other hand to reach for the metal bar of the fence, and grab it. I then pulled myself up with the help of another young Arab man who was standing on the fence.

“I was so dizzy and weak and too weak to walk. I was spread on the floor and another pilgrim, seeing that I had regained consciousness, offered me his other shroud.

“People offered me drink and some food. I then realised that I had been bitten (on) the side, by a young man from underneath.

Countless bodies were lying on the floor

Kabir lost his rucksack and most of his belongings except for a small bag around his neck.

“I spent, like, two hours sitting down recuperating,” he said.

“After that, I was assisted by another pilgrim from Niger to make it to the Jamarat and carry out the stoning rites.
“What I saw on my return to the scene of the stampede frightened me, because I just saw countless bodies lying on the floor covered in white shrouds, and I knew I could have been one of them.”

“I know I will not die until the appointed hour…. Hajj is very important to my faith, and no obstacles will discourage me from seizing another opportunity to come back.”

NUC to Suspend UNILAG over bedbug plague

The Nigerian University Commission (NUC) in an emergency meeting held in the early hours of Monday decided to suspend the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The decision to suspend the university was based on health reasons, chief among which is the Bedbug epidemic. This decision was reached after series of reports and complaints emanating from the school.

The university authority in its defense stated that a number of fumigation exercises have been carried out to put an end to what has now come to be known among the students as the ‘Bedbug Plague’. A top official of the prestigious institution who pleaded anonymity told our correspondence that, “the fumigation exercise is usually carried out during the holidays when students have vacated the residence”.

In contrary, the students who were seen protesting today as early as 7am with tattered looking beds claim that rather than exterminate the vile crawling creatures, the fumigation process (which was not properly done) seem to have empowered the bugs, as they are now seen breeding and crawling in large numbers.

We sometimes wonder who owns the room, we or the bedbugs?” a protesting student in boxers and Arsenal jersey said.

“Welcome to UniBUG!” Another one shouted.

It is no longer news that students in various halls of residence embark on personal room fumigation from time to time, in a bid to get rid of the vile pests.

Even our correspondent who visited a number of rooms in some halls of residence in the school had to conduct most of the interview on her on her feet for fear of getting infected by the bugs.

Nowhere seems to be safe as the bugs are found in rooms, common rooms, and even classes.

It has been observed that the bedbugs are even more dreaded than the strictest lecturers. This is as a result of the social stigma that befalls anyone on whose body or clothes bedbug is caught in public.

NYSC ALERT!! 5 New NYSC Procedures You must Know (SHARE THIS)

The National Youth Service Corps has changed tremendously in the past months. A lot of this changes came into effect to make the Corpers sit up and take service to their country more seriously. The other changes are to enable the processing of the NYSC list faster and easier. Below are the 5 recent changes made, that you should be aware of.

1. No more Concessional Posting for NYSC

Some days ago, the Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, disclosed:

“The NYSC is barring concessional posting, we have to take that decision, because in the past, we allowed concessional posting for prospective corps members, who have medical challenge, or married women or pregnant women, but as it stands now, our online registration platform has been designed in such away to address the problem of those prospective corps members who have health challenges or married women.

“So, all they need to do is that, in the process of doing their registration, there are information these categories of people need to supply and upload the documents, our portal has been designed in such a way that it will automatically post them to where they filled.

2. Boot Camp Internet Training now Compulsory

The National Youth Service Corps has now made Internet training compulsory in its three weeks boot camp. This is to reduce Internet Illiteracy among graduates in the country.

3. Online Registration and Mobilization
The registration for the NYSC scheme has now being made totally digital. Corpers can now login from anywhere and carry out registration and payment for Mobilization.

4. Biometric Monthly Clearance for Corpers

Corps members who absent themselves from their places of primary assignment are in for a hard time, following the introduction of a biometric technology for the conduct of corps members’ monthly clearance by the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC).

The biometric technology will effectively check cases of absenteeism, submission of monthly clearance by proxy, signing of community development service(CDS) attendance register by proxy and other forms of indiscipline among corps members.

5. National Lottery Scheme for NYSC

The Federal Government has ‘ordered’ the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to introduce a lottery scheme for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Jamila Shu’Ara said:

“The potential of the lottery business to the human population cannot be over-emphasised.

“In many countries, lottery is used to positively impact on the lives of the citizenry.”

3 reasons you should not eat in Fast Food restaurants

Fast food restaurants have proliferated all over Nigeria and they serve a useful purpose, especially when you cannot easily get access to home cooked meals. However, it has been noticed that they are also sources of various problems. What are some reasons you should avoid Fast Food restaurants?

1. Hygiene

Most Fast food restaurants have serious hygiene problems, which could lead to the spread of diseases, such as cholera. So be careful when selecting a place to eat. Look at the surrounding area, and also consider the personal hygiene of the people cooking and serving what you eat. When in doubt, kindly avoid eating in such a place.

2. Health Issues

People have varying health concerns and conditions. Hypertension for example calls for reduced intake of salt, while Diabetes, calls for reduced intake of sugars and carbohydrates, therefore people who have health problems that affect their diet need to be extra careful of eating at restaurants to avoid severe reactions.

3. Epidemics

For contagious diseases, such as Ebola, Cholera and so on, the fastest and easiest method of spreading is usually through places used by the public. Most restaurants do not provide proper hand sanitizers, neither do they disinfect their eating utensils properly. Therefore you could quite easily contact one disease or the other.
