Secondary school is over and done with. Now its time to move to the next level of education, which for most people is a tertiary institution, either polytechnic, University or a college of Education. However what are some things you have to consider before selecting a course of study?
Duration
While some courses take four years, others take five, six or even seven years. It is vital to put this into consideration, depending on your own age and other necessary factors. If you will be above 28 after studying the course, you should consider something less, because most job vacancies these days come with age limits. Also NYSC comes with age limit.
Job Opportunities
Most people ignore this factor, partly because they are sure of a job when they graduate, which is very good. However if you are one of those who is not very sure of a place after the tertiary education. Then you have to give special thought to which course to select, it is not all about what you love. Check out the availability of job opportunities for the course and the financial rewards involved.
Passion
This is where personality comes in. If you are going to spend at least four years studying a particular course, then you should have a measure of passion for the course. While this does not mean you can only learn what you love, it means you should have reasonable interest that will sustain you through the four years.
Personal Ability
You also have to consider your personal ability as a person. you can ask yourself questions like: What do i find it easier to do? what subjects was i effortlessly better at in Secondary school? What subjects do i still have residual knowledge in after secondary school? Do i think abstractly or practically? The answers will point you in the proper direction.
