5 reasons students commit suicide and how to help (SHARE THIS)

The suicide rate among young ones is on the increase. Why is this the case? While this article in no way supports suicide, we aim to look at the reasons  for its occurrence and how to prevent or stop it happening among friends.

High Expectations

For the average student coming into the university environment, he/she comes with expectations, most times placed on him/her by society and parents, sometimes placed by themselves. Expectations however can be dangerous in a world where nothing is certain. Therefore some students fail to reach high expectations. The resulting disappointment and feelings of worthlessness, might lead to suicidal tendencies. Parents and students alike should avoid the do or die attitude towards life.

Fear of repercussions

Most times they have damaged something they feel cannot be repaired, so they would rather die, than live to see the consequences. Teenage pregnancy is chief among this. Failing to secure admission and also other things can also cause so much shame, that the young person cannot imagine life after such.

Depression

Some students are clinically depressed, this is more of a medical condition than an emotional one. Such people if not treated on time might become so depressed and mentally unstable that they will plan and go through with the suicide. Usually there is no discernible cause, they might be people who outwardly seem very fine. It is necessary that parents and guardian monitor young ones who start behaving strangely out of the blue and seek urgent medical attention for this ones.

Drug Abuse

Drug abuse leads to psychotic and schizophrenic behavior. The person may start to hear voices and feel a intense desire to end it all. The worldwide incidence of schizophrenia is 1% and often strikes otherwise healthy, high-performing individuals, whose lives, though manageable with medication , never fulfill their original promise. Schizophrenics are just as likely to talk freely about the voices commanding them to kill themselves as not, and also, in my experience, give honest answers about thoughts of suicide when asked directly. This conditions can be treated if discovered.

Heartbreaks

This might sound childish, but we all are children inside, and when a love relationship goes awry, for some it is impossible to keep living. Most forget everyone else who might love them and decide to end it all. Most times it is feelings of worthlessness and the pain of memories that drive them to the action. However it is always good to remember that love is always around the corner.
