Karim Benzema capitalised on a mistake from Loris Karius to score one of the most bizarre goals in Champions League history.
After a goalless first half, Real Madridtook the lead in the 51st minute as Benzema’s opener left Karius and the rest of Liverpool’s players stunned.
Karius had the ball in his hands and looked to throw it out to Virgil van Dijk before
the French striker stuck out his foot to intercept. Benzema got a relatively clean connection and the ball trickled towards the net.
Karius remonstrated with the officials while Madrid’s players celebrated, but his appeals were rightly waved away as Benzema’s goal was perfectly legitimate.
